Life Narrated by Nature

Datz Press - October 2021

Life Narrated by Nature: sustainable wooden case and handmade book with gold leaf.

Life Narrated by Nature, a limited edition (100) photo book published by Datz Press, sold out in a few months. I am overwhelmed by the response. It’s immensely gratifying to know the communication sent out into the world was received. I hope everyone who has the book finds joy, solace and peace in this representation of nature.

I would like to thank these people at Datz for believing in my work and putting it into such beautiful form: Sangyon Joo, founder and director of Datz, photographer and visionary, who believed I might have something to say; Junglye Lim, project manager of the book, who communicated with me regularly for a year and actually put the book together with her own hands; Younghea Kim, creative director at Datz and designer of the book.

The Special Edition of the book (20) also sold out quickly. On the box were gold stars representing Ursa Major, my favorite constellation. For all my life, I have loved looking at the night sky, and for almost as long I’ve looked for the Big Dipper first, an asterism within the constellation Ursa Major, the Great Bear, or the greater she-bear. I love bears. I have spent much time looking for wild bears in the daytime (and I am lucky to have seen quite a few), and then looking at the Great Bear at night. It was important to me for the photo of a bear to appear in my book. People around the world, perhaps since pre-history, have recognized Ursa Major, or the Big Dipper, and have created wonderful names and origin stories for it. I also love that the two stars at the end of the Big Dipper’s bowl point to Polaris, our North Star, the point that gives us direction, that guides our way.

Each Special Edition included an original, signed and numbered print made with pigment, gampi and gold leaf.

Original and special editions now sold out, however prints from the book are available.
