We are everything, we are nothing
2020 - present
I
When my daughter was three years old,
I think I was the whole world to her,
she loved me so.
But I knew that in a universe of 21.6 sextillion planets,
I was — simultaneously — nothing.
III
I am awed and astonished
by the sky and everything in it,
near and far,
by the land
and all the flora and fauna residing there,
by the water and its moods and mirrors
and the creatures living underneath.
II
Humans.
Music, art, science,
compassion, curiosity, cooperation,
LOVE.
At our best, we are wonderful.
IV
At our worst, we are terrifying.
We forget we aren’t everything.
V
The beautiful and wondrous world,
in a sense fragile,
but in another, incredibly resilient.
When we are gone,
it will heal, evolve, and continue.
Nature does not need us.
We need nature.
